From March 2020, due to COVID-19, Ear irrigation (ear syringing) will no longer be available.  

Ear syringing is no longer considered to be the first line treatment for the clearing of ear wax and it is not a funded service within the NHS for General Practice.

*** Face masks - 14 May 2020 ***

Unfortunately we do not have sufficient supplies to be able to issue face masks to patients attending the surgery for an appointment.

We have enough for the GPs and Nurses to wear, which will protect you from us; however, if you have a face mask/bandana/scarf,  please wear this as a precaution when attending the surgery.

The Hampshire & IOW Children & Young People’s Crisis Line has now been running for one month and has received many calls from young people across the area, but has capacity to support even more young people.  See the poster and leaflet below for more details.

The crisis line is open: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 3:00pm to 8:30pm including bank holidays.

For any young person 11-17 years old living within the Hampshire County Council & Isle of Wight Council area (but not Portsmouth or Southampton)

The crisis line can provide:

  • Immediate access to safe and confidential one to one emotional support via freephone
  • Crisis de-escalation
  • Self-harm/suicide safety planning
  • Advice on healthy coping skills and resources such as CBT/DBT skills, mindfulness, relaxation, self-care, positive mental health
  • Signposting for both young people and parents.

Due to coronavirus, as of Wednesday 18th March 2020 ALL Doctor’s appointments at The Denmead Practice will be via telephone appointment only – no face to face appointments will be available unless the doctor feels this is necessary. This includes the Hambledon Surgery. We are also limiting how far ahead nurse and blood test appointments can be booked – no bookings will be made more than 2 weeks in advance.

We have taken these drastic measures to protect you and our staff by minimising the risk of infection.

Other than to collect prescriptions, we ask you not to visit the surgery at all: enquiries will be dealt with via the telephone.

If you have concerns regarding coronavirus or symptoms (fever or cough) please visit NHS111 online – this information is being constantly updated.

Just to reiterate, if your GP feels you need to be seen, you will be offered a face to face appointment.

Important information about the coronavirus (COVID-19)

The NHS and Public Health England (PHE) are well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal.


The latest information on symptoms of coronovirus infection and areas where recent travel may have resulted in a high risk of exposure can be found on


NHS 111 has an online coronavirus service that can tell you if you need medical help and advise you what to do.


Use this service if:

  • you think you might have coronavirus;
  • if you have a NEW continuous cough or high temperature
  • you've been in close contact with someone with coronavirus.


Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone.


Like the common cold, coronavirus infection usually occurs through close contact with a person with novel coronavirus via cough and sneezes or hand contact. A person can also catch the virus by touching contaminated surfaces if they do not wash their hands.

Testing of suspected coronavirus cases is carried out in line with strict guidelines. This means that suspected cases are kept in isolation, away from public areas of GP surgeries, pharmacies and hospitals and returned home also in isolation. Any equipment that come into contact with suspected cases are thoroughly cleaned as appropriate. Specific guidance has also been shared with NHS staff to help safeguard them and others. Patients can be reassured that their safety is a top priority, and are encouraged to attend all appointments as usual.


Everyone is being reminded to follow Public Health England advice to:

  • Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are unwell

Welcome to The Denmead Practice Online 





There has been a Doctor's surgery in Denmead since 1932. Before the Second World War the Doctors lived in Hambledon and had a branch surgery in Denmead - in fact the branch surgery was one of the cottages next to the present Health Centre.

The first Denmead surgery was in Dr Horn's house, it then moved to Ashling Park Road prior to the current Health Centre, which was built on the old village pond in 1974.

Denmead surgery as it is now, is a semi-rural Dispensing Practice with the branch surgery at Hambledon. The practice operates from Health Authority premises and incorporates on-site community services.

The Practice covers an area of 80 square miles and has a list size of just over 9100 patients. The workload is covered by 3 male full-time partners and 2 female part-time partners plus a supportive Practice team.

Our Primary Health Care Team offers comprehensive care for all our patients in Denmead and surroundings villages.

We try to maintain good continuity of care by offering a professional service by your own doctor. We have a range of in-house services and a network of Community staff who can be called upon by your doctor for specialist care.

As a Practice we participate in research studies from time to time through the Primary Care Research Network.
